Hoof Rot
Treponeme-associated hoof disease (TAHD), which causes hoof deformities, limping, and movement impairment in elk, has been detected in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California. The disease appears to be highly infectious among elk, regardless of age or sex. There are currently no vaccines or treatment options for animals in the field.
Tests show the disease does not affect elk meat or organs, and harvested animals should be safe to eat so long as safe processing and cooking practices are followed.
To avoid spreading this infectious disease into new areas, hunters are asked to leave hooves in the field where the animal is killed. Please also remove all mud from your boots and tires (particularly if driving off-road) before leaving the site.
