Qoq’aalx Recovery

Working to recover bison throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

The Nez Perce Tribe’s Wildlife Division supports efforts to promote the restoration of bison and hunting opportunities throughout the Greater Yellowstone area.  As a result of partnerships with federal, state, and other regional partners, bison are once again occupying portions of the landscape beyond Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.  Travel to “buffalo country” to harvest bison is a long-standing tradition of the Nez Perce, one which has been re-established through many years of dedicated effort.  Wildlife Division involvement is focused primarily on supporting policy engagement with managers and policymakers regarding the Interagency Bison Management Plan, Montana’s bison conservation and management efforts, and the National Park Service’s Ship to Slaughter program.
